ABSTRACT

Brain and leptomeningeal metastases are among the most challenging complications of metastatic cancer and remain a major cause of neurological morbidity and mortality. This seminar will highlight emerging concepts in the biology of CNS metastases and discuss how recent discoveries are informing new strategies for prevention and therapy. In this context, ongoing clinical studies at the Dr. Senckenberg Institute of Neurooncology in Frankfurt investigate biological effects of irradiation in brain metastases as well as mechanisms underlying the development of leptomeningeal dissemination in patients with brain metastases. These efforts aim to uncover actionable mechanisms that may enable earlier detection and more effective treatment of brain and leptomeningeal metastases. Ultimately, integrating mechanistic insights with clinically embedded research may open new avenues for the treatment of CNS metastases.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: PIA SUSAN ZEINER

As an Advanced Clinician Scientist, Dr. Pia Zeiner leads a research group focused on the interplay between brain tumours and the immune system, aiming to uncover the mechanisms underlying treatment response and resistance. The lab explores minimally invasive strategies, particularly CSF-based liquid biopsy, to inform personalised therapeutic decisions. A key focus is placed on patients with brain metastases and leptomeningeal disease, supported by prospective clinical studies.
